Semana Santa in Xela

Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is one of the biggest celebrations in Guatemala.  I was in Quetzaltenango, or Xela, during the Friday and Saturday before Easter.  I can’t explain too well what was going on as I don’t have much working knowledge of the Bible, but there’s an article here that goes more in depth.  The second procession on Saturday was right in front of my house, so I just had to stand on my doorstep to watch everything.

  • Thanks for sharing, I found this article, while googling for free downloads and ran across this site, interesting comments and great points made.

  • Those are really beautiful pictures! Makes me want to travel to Guatemala. The only south-american country I’ve visited so far is Bolivia, and it’s so rich of culture, it’s hard to believe. Too bad many of the roads that lead to the most beautiful landscapes are cracked and bumpy… It is really worth visiting Bolivia, though

I heard that during Semana Santa, in some countries, people do submit themselves to actual crucificion as part of their penitence.
