Playa del Carmen and Tulum Ruins in Photos

Playa del Carmen is one of the prettiest beaches I’ve seen… ever. Silky white sand, deep blue sky, multi-colored waters – it doesn’t get much better than this.

Tulum

Just an hour’s ride in a colectivo (shared van) are the ruins of Tulum. While not as impressive as some other ruins I’ve seen, the ancient Mayan buildings perched on the cliff overlooking the ocean do provide dramatic scenery.

  • Go south on that road the ruins are on and stay at a little eco place or cabana on the beach…and you should have a huge strand virtually to yourself.  These in Tulum are the most beautiful beaches, to me, that I’ve seen anywhere.
Are you going swimming with the whale sharks (huge bus-sized plankton eating fish, not sharks)?  Their migration is July-September off the coast of Isla Mujeres, an island just northeast and a few miles off shore from Cancun.  I am going to Mexico (trip #4) specifically next summer to do this! It would be a shame to miss it since you are right there and all….do I remember reading somewhere that you don’t love snorkeling though?

  • Hi Heather, Thanks for the tips :) I am actually terrified of deep water so snorkeling and swimming with animals aren’t my preferred activities. I moved inland to a little town called Valladolid, though next time I’m on the coast maybe I’ll stay on some of the Tulum’s beaches.

    Hi Jasmine

Do you have any recommendations for a good, cheap place to stay in the Playa/Tulum area?

    Thanks!

  • No sorry, I actually stayed with another travel blogger while I was there… though all the hotels on 5th avenue are very expensive.
