I flew across the world twice with less than $1,000 to my name. I’ve always been too impatient and impulsive to save up a ton of cash before traveling, so I just kinda wing it. Now, I am expanding my online empire, so I do have a good amount of cash flow coming in.
I left the US in November 2007 and am moving back to the US in May 2014 so that’s about 6 and a half years!
When I first started traveling, I did a working holiday in New Zealand and Australia. Since then, I have learned to make money online. I own a number of travel websites and also offer social media and search engine optimization services. I write sometimes, too. I’ve written more about how I work and travel on another page.
I left on my journey alone, and have done the majority of my traveling alone, too. Now, I’m fortunate to have a husband and two dogs, so we’re traveling as a family now.
Traveling can be scary, nerve wracking, anxiety triggering, and a whole host of other things. But I don’t let fear stop me. As they say, courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyway.
I’ve been traveling solo since I was 22 across many countries, and I’ve never had any problems. The keys to staying safe in most places are practicing awareness, trusting your instincts, and using common sense.
My favorite place I’ve ever been to is Colombia – that’s why I live here. Indonesia and Trinidad & Tobago are a close second.
If you believe everything you watch on the news, you’ll probably think that you’ll be kidnapped and murdered as soon as you arrive. My personal experience has been completely the opposite. I’ve traveled through many regions in Colombia, alone, by bus, over the course of three years, and I have never had any problems.
